Summer Jewelry Care

Summer is quickly approaching and you know what that means – lazy days sunbathing at the beach, outdoor sports and recreation, barbeques, and fun vacations to new destinations. It also means packing away your winter wardrobe in favor of a lighter, more colorful closet full of clothes. Summer time is also a time for bold jewelry pieces that show off in the summer sun. Statement monograms and name necklaces are the perfect accoutrement to any summer outfit. It is important to keep your necklaces and bracelets shining and in good condition. You want to wear it all summer long! Here are some tips to keep them looking sparkling and brand new so you can enjoy it all summer long.

  • Make sure to remove all your jewelry before taking a dip in a hot tub or diving into a pool. Chlorine in the water damages and discolors the metal, including sterling silver and gold. The chlorine also erodes the polish and finish of gemstones. Removing them also applies for going into bodies of salt water. Just like chlorine, salt water can be especially damaging to different metals.
  • Take off your jewelry before applying suntan lotion, sunblock, baby oil, bug spray, or any other lotion or spray. Not only are there chemicals in these items that will break down the finish on your jewelry and cause it to look dingy and dull, but lotions can get stuck in the small nooks and crannies, especially inside gemstone prongs, which can be hard to remove later on and cause problems.
  • Before the summer starts (and really all year long) make sure to get all clasps and gemstone prongs repaired. It is very easy to lose your necklace or Swarovski Crystal on a piece of jewelry when you are running around the beach playing volleyball or going on a nature hike through a national park. This will avoid future loss. You don’t want to lose anything just because your jewelry is not in the best shape.
  • Last but not least, clean your jewelry after wearing it every day. Sweat and oils can easily dull the shine of your jewelry. Get a good cloth to polish your pieces of jewelry to aid in getting back that sparkle and sheen. Look for polishes that can be used to eliminate tarnish.

Enjoy looking good this summer and keep your jewelry looking shiny!
